Overview
What does “Contemporary art” mean? How does the art market work and how has it become a main structural component of today’s art system?
Join curator and author Piero Tomassoni as he takes us on a journey through the main cultural developments which shaped today’s artistic and market landscape.
This course, advanced in nature but suitable for beginners as well as experienced students, will develop and deepen the participants’ understanding of the societal and aesthetic influences impacting art in the 20th and 21st century: from the historical and post-war avant-gardes, to the collapse of the great narrations, to the metaverse.
With a double focus on art history and market practice, this five week course will provide the key tools to analyse and interpret today’s art world, while encouraging independent critical thinking.
Learning Outcomes:
• Gain a better understanding of key art movements and artists from the past century, and why their work is fundamentally influential and meaningful today
• Learn about the key art market events that have shaped the market as we know it
• Solidify an analytical toolset to improve your understanding of current artistic movements and practices
